Santa Fe Murals

Santa Fe has a vast collection of murals painted on concrete block fences, the sides of buildings and on walls in parks and other public places. As a Santa Fe resident, I drove by these murals everyday, without really seeing them; Santa Fe unseen. In addition, murals don’t last forever. They crumble, fade and in some cases, are painted over, or the structures they adorn are torn down and replaced by something new.

My project is two-fold. First, my intent is to photograph the murals and process them in a completely new way, taking them out of context, removing extraneous content, restoring and saturing color in order to really see them. Next, I intend to document the murals, shooting them as is and, to the extent possible, crediting the artist, their location and when they were painted.

The images that follow are the first installment in a multi-year project, that, when complete, will include a fine art book, a documentary volume and an interactive map to facilitate self-guided tours. The images are my interpretation. The title and the original artist are listed.
